Artist Books

Using the written word and books as visual artistic medium dates back centuries, artist books were popularized by early 20th century avant-garde movements like Futurism, Dada, and Surrealism. In recent decades, artist books have taken on aspects of 'zine culture, graffiti, underground comix, and printmaking, leading most to produced in limited editions of less than 250.
Our large collection of silkscreened books, folios, prints, and other expressions of the medium is an outlier in our collection.
While not always erotica in nature, the punk rock, D.I.Y., and counter-cultural energy found in most artist books makes the overlap in the Venn diagram with smut quite large.

In the archives, we have examples of the form dating from 1925 to 2025. Some are traditional books; others resemble comics, or tarot decks, or a stamp collection, or... who can say? We have works by skilled unknowns, as well as legends of the medium like Gary Panter, Poquito Bolino, Anna Hellsgård, Christian Gfeller, Philipe UG, Bruno Richard, Keiichi Ôta, Stu Mead, Antoine Bernhart, Jacques Pyon, and many more. Some are handmade or printed by the artist, while others were made by some of the greatest printing collectives in Europe, like Le Dernier Cri, Bongoût/Re:Surgo!, United Dead Artists, Editions E2, and CBO.
